Northeast Petroleum University is the focus of undergraduate course. It is a national key university born with the discovery of Daqing Oilfield, the largest oil field in China. It is a petroleum institute jointly established by China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Corporation, China Petrochemical Group Corporation, China Offshore Oil Corporation and Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government.

Northeast Petroleum University, referred to as Dongyou, is located in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. It is a university that focuses on engineering, with the coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, teaching and art. 1978 has been identified as one of the 88 national key universities.

The predecessor of Northeast Petroleum University is Northeast Petroleum Institute and Daqing Petroleum Institute. The school originated from Tsinghua University Oil Refining Department, was bred in Beijing Petroleum Institute, and was born and developed in Daqing Oilfield, which is one of the important achievements of Daqing Oilfield Congress. The school's predecessor, Northeast Petroleum Institute, was founded in May 1960, renamed Daqing Petroleum Institute in July/975, and officially renamed Northeast Petroleum University in April/20 10.

As of March 2023, the school covers an area of 169 1200 square meters, of which Qinhuangdao campus covers an area of 332,800 square meters, with a total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment exceeding 666 million yuan and a collection of 2.64 million books.
