1978 with the approval of the State Council, China Institute of Mining and Technology was established in graduate department, Beijing to recruit and train graduate students. 1997 In July, with the approval of the former State Education Commission and Beijing Municipality, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) was established, and undergraduate enrollment began 1998. The school is located in Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, with the National Olympic Park in the east and the Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan and Xiangshan in the west. The school covers an area of 240,000 square meters with a total construction area of 320,000 square meters.

China University of Mining and Technology, formerly known as Jiaozuo Road Mining School, was founded on 1909 by the British company Beijing Syndicate Co., Ltd. Jiaozuo Road and Mine School is one of the three private universities in the late Qing Dynasty and the only private engineering university run by foreigners. It is also the earliest mining institution of higher learning established in China and continues to this day, ranking among the earliest modern universities in China.
