Postgraduate education in Beijing Institute of Technology started at 1953 and resumed at 1978. 198 1 was approved by the State Council as one of the first batch of universities authorized for doctoral and master's degrees in China, and 1984 was approved by the State Council as one of the first batch of 22 pilot graduate schools in China. The predecessor of Beijing Institute of Technology was the Academy of Natural Sciences founded by 1940 in Yan 'an. Since its establishment, the school has been highly valued and strongly supported by the state, and has been approved by the state since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The Graduate School of Beijing Institute of Technology has a comprehensive management office, a training office, a discipline construction and degree office and a postgraduate work department, which are responsible for discipline construction, postgraduate enrollment, training, degree awarding, postgraduate moral education and management, and reception and management of postdoctoral and visiting scholars. The graduate school has been exploring a "student-oriented" postgraduate education system to improve the quality of training in an all-round way. After years of hard work, a complete system has been formed.
