Hunan University is both a 985 university and a 2 1 1 university. There are 27 colleges under the school, with disciplines and specialties covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, medicine, art, etc.1/categories.

There are 74 undergraduate majors, 37 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 30 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor's degree and 28 post-doctoral research stations. Two disciplines has two first-class national key disciplines and 14 national key disciplines. Seven disciplines were selected as national defense characteristic disciplines, and the disciplines of chemistry and mechanical engineering entered the ranks of "world-class disciplines".

Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, it has won the National Science and Technology Award 16.
