The school's predecessor was Taigu Geological School, which was founded in 1956. 1958 moved to Taiyuan and changed its name to Taiyuan Institute of Geology (undergraduate); 1959 moved to Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, and was renamed Fuzhou Institute of Geology.
1978 was named Fuzhou Institute of Geology; 1982 was renamed East China Institute of Geology; In 2002, it was renamed Donghua Institute of Technology. In 2002 and 2003, Jiangxi National Defense Science and Technology Industry School and Fuzhou Teachers College merged successively. Renamed Donghua Institute of Technology.
