Zhongshan Eye Center is one of the affiliated units of Sun Yat-sen University. It is a modern multifunctional ophthalmic center integrating ophthalmology medical treatment, scientific research, teaching, health care, prevention and treatment of blindness. It is famous for its large scale, many specialties, complete specialties, high overall academic level and advanced instruments and equipment.

At present, the center has a total of 359 staff members, including 304 professionals, senior and deputy senior titles 108, intermediate titles 126, 62 doctors and 32 masters. The center also has an office for the prevention and treatment of blindness. The specialty of corneal diseases is listed as the key specialty of "Five One Science and Education Project" in Guangdong Province, and the eye bank and corneal transplantation laboratory are listed as the key laboratories of "Five One Science and Education Project" in Guangdong Province. Corneal diseases and cataracts are listed as key medical specialties in Guangdong Province. Each major has formed its own medical and scientific research characteristics. Corneal transplantation, excimer laser corneal refractive surgery, corneal morphology, cataract surgery, a series of studies on the pathogenesis of uveitis, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and retinal vitreous diseases are in the leading position in China, and some areas have reached the international advanced level. In 2008, three specialties in our center, namely, glaucoma specialty, cataract specialty and corneal disease specialty, became the key medical specialties in Guangdong Province during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, among which cataract specialty and corneal disease specialty were the key medical specialties in Guangdong Province during the Tenth Five-Year Plan, and glaucoma specialty was a new medical specialty in Guangdong Province.
