In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was formed by the merger of Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers. It is the largest comprehensive university and a key university in Hubei Province.

The school is located in Jingzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Jingzhou has a history of more than 2600 years. It is the birthplace of Chu culture and one of the concentrated places of the three kingdoms culture, the hometown of the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan, and the important town of sealing the king's house in past dynasties.

It is located in the three towns of Wuhan, with nine provinces in the east, the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River in the west, the vast Dongting Lake in the south and Wudang Mountain in the north. With beautiful campus environment and beautiful scenery, it is a garden-style college in Hubei Province.

The former Jianghan Petroleum Institute belongs to China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Corporation. Its predecessor was Beijing Institute of Petroleum Technology founded by 1950, and 1978 was named Jianghan Petroleum Institute. Since 2000, it has been established by the central and local governments and placed under the management of Hubei Province. Hubei Agricultural College, formerly known as Huazhong Agricultural College Jingzhou Branch, was founded in 1977.

Hubei Agricultural College was established with the approval of the State Education Commission 65438-0989; The former Jingzhou Teachers College, formerly known as Hubei fourth area Simple Teachers College, was founded in 1936. Jingzhou Teachers College was founded in 1978, and 1999 was transformed into Jingzhou Teachers College with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The former Hubei Medical College of Health Workers was founded in 195 1, renamed as Jingzhou Branch of Wuhan Medical College in 1977, and renamed as Hubei Medical College of Health Workers in 1984.
