1928, outstanding educators Cai Yuanpei and Mr. Lin Fengmian chose the West Lake in Hangzhou and established the first comprehensive national art institution-"National Art Academy". The purpose of running a school is to be compatible with Chinese and western arts, create art of the times and carry forward Chinese culture. Over the past few decades, the college has moved ten times and changed its name five times: 1928, National Academy of Art.

Today, China Academy of Fine Arts is one of the most comprehensive and largest comprehensive fine arts colleges in the field of plastic arts in China. It has four campuses, spanning Hangzhou and Shanghai, covering an area of 1000 mu. There are more than 6000 students and 500 teachers. There are 76 full-time senior titles, 38 associate senior titles/kloc-0 and 77 intermediate titles/kloc-0.
The two main disciplines of the college: fine arts and design arts, have been awarded doctoral and master's degrees by the Ministry of Education.
