The University of Tsukuba is one of the oldest universities in Japan, and its predecessor can be traced back to Tokyo Normal School founded by 1872. 1949, implemented a new academic system and changed its name to Tokyo University of Education. 1September, 1967, the Japanese cabinet approved 36 institutions including Tokyo University of Education to relocate to Tsukuba. 1972 in may, the Japanese cabinet decided to move 42 institutions including the new university of Tsukuba (tentative name) as research and education institutions to Tsukuba research park city. 1973 10, University of Tsukuba was founded. On April 1 2004, the National University of Tsukuba was established.
As of February 20 15, Tsukuba University covers an area of about 258 hectares and is one of the largest universities in Japan. There are 9 academic groups and 54 majors, and 3 professors have won the Nobel Prize.
