Jilin University is a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. Ranked among the national "double first-class", "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Project" universities. The school is located in Changchun City. The current party secretary is Jiang Zhiying and the principal is Zhang Xi. The school motto is "being realistic and innovative, inspiring and striving for self-improvement". By April 30, 2022, there were 52 colleges in Jilin University with 140 undergraduate majors.

On June 12, 2000, Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Bethune Medical University, changchun university of science and technology and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications merged to form Jilin University. On August 29th, 2004, the former China People's Liberation Army Quartermaster University was transferred to Jilin University. By 2022, Jilin University will rank 27th in China University of Soft Science in 2022.
