Wuhan University, referred to as "Wu Da" for short, is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), and it is the first batch of "World-class University Construction Universities (Class A)", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project" in China. Selected into the national "Everest Plan", "20 1 1 plan", "11plan", excellent doctoral education and training plan, excellent legal talents education and training plan, and excellent engineers education and training plan.

The school has also been selected into the National College Students' Innovation Experimental Plan, the National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Plan, the National Public Postgraduate Plan for Building High-level Universities, the New Engineering Research and Practice Project, the first batch of demonstration universities in China to deepen the innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, the scholarship receiving institutions of the China Municipal Government for international students in China, the first batch of first-class network security college construction demonstration projects universities, and the first batch of independent degree authorization audit units.

Wuhan University originated in 1893. At the invitation of the Qing government, Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, founded a school of self-improvement to train diplomats proficient in foreign languages. It was the first modern college in modern China. Through inheritance and evolution, 1924 merged with National Wuchang University of Commerce, Hubei Medical University, Hubei Legislative College, Hubei College of Arts and Sciences, and private Wuchang Zhonghua University to form National Wuchang Sun Yat-sen University. 1928 was named National Wuhan University, and 1949 is even more current.
