Harbin Engineering University originated from China People's Liberation Army Institute of Military Engineering (Harbin Institute of Technology) founded by 1953, which was designated as a national key university by the central government in 1959. 1966 Retired from the army and changed its name to Harbin Institute of Technology. 1970 Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering (Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering) was established in Harbin's former military site with the Department of Naval Engineering as the main body. 1978 was designated as a national key university by the State Council. 1994 was renamed Harbin Engineering University (Harbin Engineering).

The school has been affiliated to the Sixth Ministry of Machinery Industry, China Shipbuilding Corporation and the National Defense Science, Technology and Industry Committee, and now it is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In 2007, it became a university jointly established by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Ministry of Education, the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province and the Navy. 20 19 became a university jointly established by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Education, Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government and Harbin Municipal People's Government.

The school is one of the first units that have the right to award doctoral and master's degrees. 1996 was identified as the first batch of "2 1 1 project" key construction universities. In 2002, the Graduate School was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education. 20 1 1 was identified as the national dominant discipline innovation platform project to build universities.

Characteristic major

Facing the country's major strategic needs, the school focuses on the fields of ship, sea and nuclear, builds a "three seas and one core" characteristic discipline system with "peak emergence and plateau rise", and builds a discipline ecology in which first-class training disciplines, first-class training disciplines, backbone supporting disciplines, basic frontier disciplines, humanities and social disciplines and emerging interdisciplinary disciplines support each other and develop synergistically.
