It was selected as the pilot institution of "Innovative Application Demonstration Base with Poor Integration of Digital Media Production and Education in Colleges and Universities" by the Ministry of Education, the integrated demonstration base of innovation and entrepreneurship in Industry-University-Research City in Sichuan Province, and the pilot institution of "Overall Transformation, Development and Reform of Undergraduate Colleges and Universities" in Sichuan Province.

The predecessor of the College is the School of Radio, Film and Television of Chengdu University of Technology, which was established in 1997. 200 1 renamed Chengdu university of technology radio, film and television college; 20 13 was changed to sichuan university of media and communications with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
In August 2022, official website showed that the school has two main campuses and two practice campuses, with a total area of 2,397.95 mu and a building area of 827,400 square meters. The teaching and research instruments and equipment are worth 302 million yuan, and there are 2,030,800 paper books.
