The connotation of "university" is by no means comparable to that of universities going to college today. Only excellent knowledge can make a gentleman's way known as a university. The reason why Daxue is the first of the four books is that Daxue is the system and general program of Confucianism. The highest ideal of Confucian gentlemen is to rule the country and level the world, and its status can be equated with Buddhist scriptures. If someone thoroughly understands the true meaning of the Heart Sutra, then other Buddhist Sutras can be read immediately and truly understood.
