Moscow Aeronautical Institute (National Research University), founded in 1930, is one of several engineering higher education institutions in Moscow. Since its establishment, Moscow Aviation Institute has been leading the progress of aviation technology in Russia and even the whole world. Designers from Russian tupolev Design Bureau, MIG Design Bureau and Jakovleff Design Bureau were all the first generation professors of Aviation Academy.

Many famous Russian academicians, scientists and some famous astronauts are from aviation academy. The university has more than 250 chief designers of aerospace industry, 50 academicians of Russian Academy of Sciences, 22 astronauts, 100 test pilots and 60 Olympic champions.

Moscow Aviation Institute has 13 colleges and 56 departments. 128 laboratory, 3 design bureaus, several calculation centers, an experimental factory, a set of sports aviation training facilities, an airport near Moscow, and two scientific research institutions (applied mechanics and electrodynamics, low temperature research). Moscow Aeronautical Institute is a Russian member of the Sino-Russian Union of Engineering Universities.
