Ng is the director of Microsoft Research Asia, and is responsible for supervising several research groups, including web search and data mining, natural language computing and human-computer interaction. Over the years, under his leadership, Wei-Ying's research team has been recognized as one of the global giants in search, data mining and multimedia information retrieval. The team transferred key technologies to Microsoft's search and online service products. In addition, they also published a large number of articles at large conferences such as SIGIR, WWW and ACM Multimedia. Before joining Microsoft in 200 1, Wei Ying worked in HP Lab in Palo Alto, California, working in the fields of multimedia adaptation and distributed media service infrastructure. From 1994 to 1997, Wei Ying worked on the Alexander digital library project at the University of California, Santa Barbara. During this period, he developed the first network-based image retrieval system Netra, which is considered as one of the most influential image retrieval systems. As an active member in the research field, Wei Ying has published more than 250 papers at international conferences. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Information Systems of American Computer Society (TOIS) and Journal of American Computer Society/springer Multimedia Systems. In recent years, he has served as the project co-chairman of WWW 2008, PCM 2007, AIRS 2008 and MMM 2005. Wei Ying once obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Taiwan Province State Tsinghua University,No. 1990. He received his Master of Science degree and Doctor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara at 1994 and 1997 respectively.
