Zhanjiang, formerly known as "Guangzhou Bay" or "Port City", is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. Located at the southernmost tip of Chinese mainland, Leizhou Peninsula is located at the intersection of Guangdong, Guangxi and Qiongzhou provinces, bordering the South China Sea in the east, Hainan Province across Qiongzhou Strait in the south, Beibu Gulf in the west and southwest China in the back.

Zhanjiang is the economic center of western Guangdong and Beibu Gulf Economic Circle, the shortest port city from Chinese mainland to Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, and 1984 is one of the first coastal open cities in China. Zhanjiang is also the seat of the South China Sea Fleet Command of the China Navy.
