The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, formerly known as Chengdu Institute of Telecommunications Engineering, was established in 1956 under the personal deployment of Premier Zhou Enlai, and was formed by the merger of telecommunications engineering related majors of Jiaotong University (now Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi Jiaotong University), Nanjing University of Science and Technology (now Southeast University) and South China University of Technology (now South China University of Technology). 1960 was listed as a national key institution of higher learning in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. 196 1 was identified by the central government as one of the seven national defense industrial colleges. 1988, renamed University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. /kloc-0 was identified as the first batch of national key universities in "2 1 1 project" in 1997.
