Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was established by the colonial legislature of Massachusetts in 1636. It was originally named New Citizen College in memory of Reverend john harvard, who gave generous support to the college in its early days.

The school was renamed Harvard College 1639 in March. 1780, Harvard College was officially renamed Harvard University. By the end of 20 18, there were more than 6,700 undergraduates and more than 20 postgraduates.

The development of history

1636, 10/0 On October 28th, the colonial parliament of Massachusetts Bay passed a resolution to establish an institution of higher learning, imitating Cambridge University in England, with an annual appropriation of 400 pounds. Originally named "New College" or "Newton College", this school became the first higher education institution in the United States.

1638 On September 4th, J Harvard, pastor and dean of Emanuel College, passed away. He donated half of his savings of 720 pounds and more than 400 books to the school.

March 1639, 13 In order to thank and commemorate Pastor john harvard's generous contribution in the early days of the college, the colonial Council of Massachusetts Bay passed a resolution to rename the school "Harvard College".
