Wenzhou University is the only comprehensive university in southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian and eastern Jiangxi, a key construction university in Zhejiang Province, and a doctoral degree awarding unit. It is located in Wenzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and a pioneer of reform and opening up. The school was formed by the merger of Wenzhou Normal University and the former Wenzhou University in 2004, with a history of 90 years. Academician Gu Chaohao, winner of the highest national science and technology award, is the principal.

Wenzhou University has formed a multi-level and multi-form school-running pattern, including undergraduate education, postgraduate education, continuing education, international student education and international cooperation education. Major achievements have been made in discipline construction, including the establishment of postdoctoral workstations in Zhejiang Province, and the joint training of doctors and postdocs with 24 well-known universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad. Ecology is the dominant discipline in Zhejiang Province. Nine disciplines, including chemistry, Chinese language and literature, electrical engineering, law, Marxist theory, applied economics, mechanical engineering, ecology and civil engineering, are the first-class disciplines in Zhejiang Province, and four disciplines, including chemistry, materials science, engineering and computer science, are ranked in the top of ESI 1%.
