Background of the establishment of Supercomputing College of Sun Yat-sen University
High-performance computing is an important symbol of a country's scientific and technological strength and comprehensive national strength, and has become a strategic commanding height for all countries in the world. Computational science, theoretical science and experimental science based on supercomputers are the three pillars of scientific research today. High performance computing plays an important role in promoting the growth of information industry, the transformation and development of traditional industries, and the cultivation and revitalization of strategic emerging industries. As an important capacity support for national security and development, China has listed the independent development of high-performance computing as a major national strategic task in the Outline of National Medium-and Long-Term Science and Technology Development Plan (2006-2020). China's supercomputer utilization rate is low, the research and development ability of supercomputer engineering software is insufficient, and the development of software and hardware in supercomputer industry is seriously unbalanced. The application demand of supercomputing engineering software for major scientific research and important industries urgently needs high-performance computing talents to eliminate the application bottleneck of supercomputing development in China. Starting from 20 12, Guangzhou, Sun Yat-sen University and National University of Defense Technology established the "National Supercomputing Guangzhou Center" in the East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University; 20 13 10, Tianhe-2, the fastest large computer in the world, settled in Guangzhou Center of National Supercomputing. For this reason, Sun Yat-sen University established the first supercomputing research institute in China in April, 20 13, which took on the heavy responsibility of personnel training and scientific research in the field of supercomputing (high-performance computing) and became an important support of computer science in Sun Yat-sen University.
