Hunan Normal University, located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city, is a provincial key university with a long history and famous teacher education. It is the key construction institution of the national "2 1 1 project" and the basic capacity building project of colleges and universities in the central and western regions. Selected into the "Excellent Legal Talents Education and Training Plan" and "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan", it is an excellent university in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of ordinary colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education.

The school, formerly known as National Teachers College, was founded in 1938 and reorganized into Hunan Teachers College in 1953. 1984, the school was renamed Hunan Normal University. After 2000, Hunan Institute of Education, Hunan Institute of Political Science and Law Management and Hunan Medical College merged one after another.

Master's degree programs include 223 doctoral programs, 127 postdoctoral mobile stations, 13 school motto: full-time academician of Renai Qin Jing, and two main departments: College of Arts, College of Mathematics and Computer, College of Life Sciences, College of Foreign Languages, School of Journalism and Communication, etc.
