Rutgers University, founded in 1766, is the eighth higher education institution in the United States and one of the nine private colonial colleges before the American Revolutionary War. The New Jersey Legislature passed bills on 1945 and 1956 respectively, designating Rutgers University as a public New Jersey State University.
