Wuhan University, founded in 1893, is located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. Formerly known as the self-improvement school founded by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang, in Wuchang. It is formed by the merger of Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University.
1950 The Water Conservancy Department of Hunan University was transferred to Wuhan University and merged with the Civil Engineering Department to form the Water Conservancy Department. The Medical College of Wuhan University was separated from Wuhan University and merged with the Medical College of Tongji University in Shanghai to form the Central South Tongji Medical College (now Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology).
