Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology is a national "double-first-class" construction university, which is a Class A construction university in Jiangsu Province's high-level university construction peak plan. The Institute of Meteorology of Nanjing University (the predecessor of the school) was born to serve the needs of the national strategy and national economic construction of New China, and was established in 1960, under the former Meteorological Bureau of the Central Military Commission. 1963 was independently established as Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, and 1978 was listed as a national key university. In 2000, it was handed over to the leadership of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and renamed Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology in 2004. Since 2007, the school has been approved by Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, China Meteorological Bureau, Ministry of Education and State Oceanic Administration. Now it is a central and local university mainly managed by Jiangsu Province.
