Columbia University is the oldest institution of higher education in New York State and the fifth oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Formerly known as King's College, it was established in 1754 according to the Royal Charter promulgated by King George II of England. After the American Revolution, King's College was renamed Columbia College. 1896, the school moved from Madison Avenue in midtown Manhattan to Chenbian Highland Campus, and changed its name to "Columbia University", which is still in use today.
