The school was founded in 1960, which was born in response to the national strategy of New China and the needs of national economic construction. It is affiliated to the Meteorological Bureau of the Central Military Commission, formerly known as the Meteorological College of Nanjing University, and 1963 was independently established as the Nanjing Meteorological College, and 1978 was listed as a national key university.
1990 to host the first international training course of the World Meteorological Organization. The "Regional Training Center of the United Nations World Meteorological Organization" and the "Training Center of the Typhoon Committee of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation" located in the school have trained more than 3,500 senior meteorological technicians and managers for 156 countries and regions, becoming the largest and highest quality training center in the world, and being highly praised and specially awarded by the World Meteorological Organization.
