Medicine, business and information science are traditional and highly competitive disciplines of HKU, especially dentistry, which ranks first in the world. In addition, HKU's disciplines such as civil engineering, law and politics, and education are among the best in the world.
The following is shared by a student from the University of Hong Kong:
About the University of Hong Kong
The University of Hong Kong is the oldest institution of higher education in Hong Kong. Located on Pok Fu Lam Road in the west of Hong Kong Island, facing the sea and backed by Longhu Mountain (Taiping Mountain). Starting from school, you can climb to the top of Taiping Mountain along the morning trail of Longhu Mountain.
HKU is a "university on the mountain" with no real gate. Take the elevator up at Exit A of Hong Kong University Subway Station on Hong Kong Island Line, and then arrive at University Street, which is connected with various teaching buildings, canteens, libraries and other buildings. Up and down all depend on escalators and elevators extending in all directions, so I was barely familiar with this 3D magic school until I entered the school almost a month ago.
University life in Hong Kong
The "canteens" of HKU are colorful, ranging from traditional canteens (Chinese style, Hong Kong style, Vietnamese style, Japanese style and Western style) to porridge noodle restaurants, vegetarian restaurants, Western fast food (such as spaghetti), Indian restaurants, Subway, Starbucks with a 30% discount for teachers and students of HKU, etc., which can meet the tastes of all over the world.
The main library and Zhihua Pavilion are the main places for self-study (Zhihua Pavilion is much more free than the library, and can discuss problems at normal volume; At the same time, there is an antique study that I like very much. In addition, many teaching buildings have a small number of self-study areas on almost every floor. There are computers and printers in the library, Zhihua Pavilion and teaching building. Everywhere in the school, groups of students get together to discuss and study, and the academic atmosphere is very strong.
There are many club activities in HKU, and you will see all kinds of publicity booths on campus every day. Some students in the major joined the dance club, and some students participated in many hiking and mountaineering activities in the school. At the same time, HKU also has various lectures, performances and exhibitions. , will be published through the school's Daily Mail.
I think HKU is a vibrant school. Every day is very lively, and all kinds of activities can be seen everywhere, including the canvassing of the student union, the performance of the Christmas choir, and the rehearsal of the dance company downstairs in our class every night. Sitting in a restaurant, you can hear people around you communicate in languages you don't understand, such as English, Korean, Cantonese, Japanese and Mandarin. The feeling of multicultural collision is very strong.
Study and employment
HKU has two departments related to linguistics, one belongs to the School of Humanities and the other belongs to the School of English. The former's postgraduate program is called MAL, which is the one I studied. It teaches major linguistics courses, such as phonetics and syntax ... I'm not sure about the postgraduate program of the latter. The department of linguistics mentioned here is the former.
The teachers who teach MAL courses are all doctors from Europe and America, such as MIT, University of Michigan, Cambridge and Oxford. The Department of Linguistics is a very international department with teachers from Hong Kong, Britain, the United States and South Korea. So you can greatly improve your English here, because most teachers can't speak Mandarin/Cantonese.
There are about 3-4 classes per semester, each class has one class per week for 3 hours, and each class will have a big project. Finally, you should write a paper and give a report. The Department of Linguistics of the University of Hong Kong attaches great importance to cultivating students' research ability, and students can also get more research opportunities and access to many research equipment and methods here.
After graduation, some mainland students went to foreign companies, while others stayed in Hong Kong as research assistants. Most local students in Hong Kong stay in school as teachers.
In addition, HKU sends information about school recruitment by email every day, and there are also several large school recruitment websites in Hong Kong. Professional teachers will also release information related to the food industry, such as career talks, IFSA Spring Festival Evening, etc., so it will also be very helpful for job hunting.
The above is today's sharing. In addition, I would like to remind students who want to apply for HKU that most majors in Hong Kong are open for application. Please hurry up and prepare, don't miss the opportunity!
