Academician Wei, lichen mycologist. 1955 graduated from Northwest Agricultural College. 1958- 1962 studied in the spore plant laboratory of Komanov Institute of Botany, Graduate School of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (Lenin Qin Ge), and obtained the associate doctor's degree and the doctor's degree in biological science successively. 65438-0963, Institute of Microbiology, China Academy of Sciences. He is the main founder of lichenology in China and one of the initiators and organizers of the compilation and research of spore flora in China. At present, he is honorary chairman of China Fungal Society, director of Asian Fungal Society, executive deputy editor of China Sporophyte Editorial Committee of China Academy of Sciences, director of Academic Committee of State Key Laboratory of Microbial Resources, member of People's Republic of China (PRC) Endangered Species Scientific Committee, member of Scientific Advisory Committee of China National Committee of International Biodiversity Program, consultant of mycosystema, and researcher of Plant Department of Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, USA. Visiting professor of Hebei University, Nankai University, Shandong Agricultural University, Nanjing University, etc. And the chief scientist of the compilation and research of the major project "Three Biographies of China" jointly funded by the National Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Academy of Sciences.

Academician Wei has been engaged in the research on the biodiversity and phylogenetic biology of lichen fungi since he returned from studying in 1962. He has made a special study on the flora and classification of lichens in China, especially the genera Bosom, Huangmei, Pneumonia, Volvariella, Umbilicus, Lithocarpaceae and Phyllanthus, and found and described a large number of new species, genera and families. The lichen flora of Mount Everest and king george island, Antarctica was investigated and specially studied. A systematic and in-depth comprehensive study was made on the classification of lichens of Tremellaceae in the world from the aspects of morphology, structure, chemistry, geography and molecular systematics. A new genus system was summarized from the single genus system, the old two genera system, three genera system, four genera system and five genera system, which was recognized by international academic circles and included in the Outline of World Ascomycetes System 1993 and 1995. * * * Published more than 70 papers and 4 monographs. At present, the molecular biological development geography, the growth of bacteria and algae and the conservation biology of lichen are being studied. In addition, the protection and development of lichen species and gene resources, and the sand-fixing biology of desert lichens in western China were also studied.

Tibetan lichens, as an integral part of the research on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, won the 1986 special prize for scientific and technological progress of China Academy of Sciences. The Antarctic ecosystem won the special prize of the State Oceanic Administration and the second prize of scientific and technological progress with 1996 and 1997 respectively.
