Shanghai International Studies University is the same age as New China. Its predecessor was Shanghai Russian School affiliated to East China People's Revolutionary University. Its first chairman was Jiang Chunfang, a famous Russian translator, publisher and founder of the encyclopedia of China. Later, it was listed as a national key university of the Ministry of Education in 1963 after being inherited and transformed by the Foreign Language School affiliated to East China People's Revolutionary University, Shanghai Russian Institute (revised) and Shanghai International Studies Institute. 1985 approved by the Ministry of Education, the English name of the school was determined as "Shanghai International Studies University" (SISU for short), and 1994 was officially renamed as "Shanghai International Studies University".

Shanghai International Studies University has a complete talent training system with 47 undergraduate majors, including 33 language majors and 4 non-language majors/kloc-0. There are 7 master's degree authorization points for the first-level disciplines, including foreign languages and literature, political science, applied economics, education, China language and literature, journalism and communication, and business administration, and 39 master's degree authorization points for the two disciplines; 7 master's degree authorization points: MBA, translation, Chinese international education, finance, law, international business, journalism and communication; Doctoral degree is authorized in three first-level disciplines: foreign languages and literature, political science and business administration, and there are 19 doctoral degree authorization points in the two disciplines; Two Post-Doctoral Research Center: foreign languages, literature and politics.
Shanghai International Studies University has successively established a joint school-running system with Xinhua News Agency, China Journal, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), First Financial Media (CBN) and Shanghai Foreign Language Channel (ICS), and implemented the credit mutual recognition project in the Yangtze River Delta.
