Shanxi University, founded in 1902 (the 28th year of Guangxu reign of Qing Dynasty), is one of the first three national universities in China. Formerly known as Shanxi University Hall, it was founded by British Timothy Richard and Shanxi Governor Cen Chunxuan. The school is located in Houjia Lane, Taiyuan (now taiyuan normal College).

In the early Republic of China, it was renamed Shanxi University;

19 18 was confirmed as National Shanxi University;

193 1 renamed Shanxi university;

1949 China university science college merged into Shanxi university;

1953 was renamed as Shanxi Normal University, and the Medical Engineering College was built independently one after another. The law school was named School of Finance and Economics, and was later placed under Renmin University of China.

1959, Shanxi university was established again;

196 1, Shanxi University merged with Shanxi Normal University, still named Shanxi University;

1962, Shanxi Institute of Physical Education and Shanxi Art College merged into Shanxi University.
