Beijing Foreign Studies University Portuguese (Undergraduate)
Portuguese (undergraduate)
Portuguese belongs to the Latin family of Indo-European language family and is the seventh largest language in the world. Besides Portuguese, Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, East Timor and Macau. At present, the number of Portuguese speakers in the world has exceeded 200 million.
Founded in the early 1960s, Portuguese major is the earliest teaching unit in China, with abundant teachers and rich teaching experience. Over the past 40 years, a large number of foreign language professionals with good political quality, solid Portuguese-speaking foundation and strong working ability have been trained, many of whom hold important positions in state organs such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce and Xinhua News Agency.
Portuguese teaching is divided into two levels, undergraduate and postgraduate. The undergraduate course lasts for four years. It is divided into basic teaching and advanced teaching. The teaching task in the basic stage is to comprehensively and strictly train students' basic skills and cultivate their practical ability to use language strictly. The teaching task in the advanced stage is to further expand knowledge, pay attention to cultivating comprehensive language ability, enrich cultural knowledge and improve communicative competence. The postgraduate education system is two and a half years.
In addition to specialized courses in Portuguese, the school also offers English as a second foreign language course for freshmen and sophomores, with four classes a week, accounting for 26% of the weekly foreign language courses. In order to cultivate compound talents, the school offers English, economy and trade, diplomacy and other minor courses for two years. Third-year undergraduate students (non-English majors) can apply for CET-4, and fourth-year students can apply for CET-8.
Portuguese courses mainly focus on language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Basic professional courses have 0/6 classes per week, including exercises, reading, conversation, listening and writing. In the fourth stage, courses such as interpretation, Portuguese-Chinese translation, Chinese-Portuguese translation, Portuguese literature, foreign newspapers and periodicals, Portuguese economy and trade, Portuguese literature and writing will be added. Besides classroom teaching, we also organize various extracurricular activities, such as; Phonetic contests, foreign language speeches, drama performances, oral English and composition contests, and occasional invitations to the diplomatic departments of Portuguese-speaking countries in China and famous domestic scholars to give a series of lectures have further expanded students' cultural knowledge.
Portuguese major is a major with more foreign exchanges in our school, and maintains good communication and cooperation with Portugal and Macao. In addition to sending a Portuguese-speaking expert from Cammons College in Portugal to my major every year, my professional students have been invited to attend the "Portuguese Language and Culture Summer School" of the University of Macau every year since the 1980s. Since 1998, our school has signed a joint school-running agreement with the University of Macau and the Macau Foundation. Accordingly, the third-year students majoring in Portuguese in our school will be provided with scholarships by the Macao Foundation, and a Portuguese teacher from our school will lead them to the University of Macau for a one-year intensive study. Because there are many Portuguese teachers and China teachers who offer many professional courses together, the professional level of students has been obviously improved; Their real life and communication skills have been greatly improved.
In order to cooperate with Portuguese teaching, in 199 1, our school established a Portuguese research center, and many Portuguese universities and other institutions donated thousands of books and audio-visual materials to the center, which improved the teaching conditions of Portuguese majors.
Employment destination of graduates: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Xinhua News Agency, International Liaison Department and other national ministries and commissions, as well as the second and third departments of the General Staff Department, national television stations, international radio stations, travel agencies, foreign embassies in China, Chinese-funded and foreign-funded enterprises. For many years, the employment situation of Portuguese graduates has been good. With the continuous expansion of political, diplomatic, economic, trade, scientific and cultural exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, it is believed that the future of Portuguese-speaking majors will be better.
