The school 1958 was founded in Beijing, formerly known as Beijing Electric Power Institute, and has long been managed by the national electric power department. 1969 school moved to Handan, Hebei province, 1970 moved to Baoding, renamed Hebei Electric Power Institute. 1978 was approved by the State Council as a national key university, and was renamed as North China Electric Power Institute in the same year. From June 5438 to October 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school headquarters was moved from Baoding to Beijing, and a campus of North China Electric Power University (Baoding) was set up.
