Shanghai Medical Devices College was founded in 2000 by the Central Ministry of Health 1960, and it was successively subordinate to the State Administration of Medicine and the State Food and Drug Administration of the United States, and was managed by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Shanghai Publishing and Printing Institute is a multidisciplinary institution of higher learning integrating engineering, literature and art, which was founded in 1953. In July 2003, it was placed under the management of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and its School of Publishing and Printing was established. At the same time, the establishment of Shanghai Publishing and Printing College was retained to recruit foreign students. Now it belongs to the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and is a university jointly established by Shanghai and the State Press and Publication Administration.

Shanghai Medical Device College is the only college in China that specializes in training engineers and technicians of medical devices and pharmaceutical equipment. It undertakes the training and further study of professional and technical personnel in the medical device industry and pharmaceutical machinery industry, and is a national medical device and pharmaceutical equipment training center authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The school has 10 professional laboratories, including biomedical engineering center laboratory, medical device engineering center laboratory and medical imaging engineering center laboratory, and 1 internship factory.
