The school was founded in 1946, and its birth has a direct historical origin with Northeastern University. In the early days of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Northeastern University moved to Santai County, Sichuan Province. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Northeastern University moved back to Shenyang, where teachers and students from Liuchuan founded the North Sichuan College of Agriculture and Industry. 1949, Xishan College was absorbed and renamed as North Sichuan University.
1950 merged with North Sichuan College of Literature and moved to Nanchong City, Sichuan Province. 1952 Sichuan Normal University was established with North Sichuan University as the main body, and some majors of East Sichuan Education College (formerly China Rural Construction College), Sichuan University and West China University were merged. 1964 Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (formerly Chengdu University) was merged into the school.
