Fudan University Library, formerly known as the May 5th Reading Room, was officially built in 1922. At present, it consists of liberal arts museum, science museum, medical museum, Zhangjiang museum, Jiangwan museum and ancient books department (located on the fifth floor of Guanghua Building), covering an area of 57,984 square meters.

By the end of 20 10, there were about 5 million books (including bound books), including about 400,000 online books (including 60,000 rare books) and 654.38+10,000 books of the Republic of China. In 2000, more than 7,000 Chinese and western paper periodicals, 0.639 million electronic books/kloc-0, 33,800 Chinese and western full-text electronic periodicals (0.000 Chinese/kloc-0, 23,800 English) and 256 databases were ordered.

The library has 13 stacks, 4 lending rooms, 3 book circulation offices, 20 reading rooms, 3 student study rooms and more than 3,000 reading seats. Weekly opening hours 105 hours, receiving more than 6000 readers every day. Existing employees 193 people, including 6 senior titles, 32 deputy senior titles and 89 intermediate titles. There are 7 doctors, 47 masters and 50 undergraduates. The working departments of the library are: editorial department, liberal arts distribution department, science distribution department, medical distribution department, newspaper office, ancient books department, digitization department, reference and consultation department, sci-tech novelty retrieval workstation, literature retrieval teaching and research section, office, comprehensive business department, international exchange department and editorial department of academic journals.

Fudan University Library is the deputy director of the National College Library and Information Work Steering Committee and one of the two national central libraries of CASHL (China Academic Humanities and Social Sciences Library). There are foreign language teaching materials centers of the Ministry of Education for the whole country and East China, stacks of the foreign language book introduction center of the Ministry of Education, European Union book shelves, sci-tech novelty retrieval workstations of the Ministry of Education (comprehensive category), sci-tech novelty retrieval stations of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission (computer and biology), chairman and secretariat of the National Medical Literature Retrieval Teaching Research Association, and master of library science training center, and they have undertaken the editing and publishing work of two magazines, namely, China Index and Research on Library and Information Work in Shanghai Universities.

In August 2008, the library computer integrated management system was replaced by Aleph 500. In addition to the regular book lending service, the library also provides various services such as electronic resource retrieval, Dialog international online retrieval, interlibrary loan, document delivery, consultation and answering questions, sci-tech novelty retrieval, retrieval and quotation, reader training, self-service copying and so on. Set up literature information retrieval courses for all kinds of readers and train master students in library science.
