Leo Oufan Lee: This is the seriousness of the problem. Some humanities professors who teach in American universities and some intellectuals in American universities are also very anxious about the system of American universities and humanities and begin to reflect and criticize. Since Frankfurt School, we are familiar with a series of post-modern critical theories, such as post-colonial theory, gender theory and race theory, which are basically put forward by scholars in universities. From the perspective of historical paradox, this happened when Asian universities actively imitated the United States. Universities in mainland China and Hongkong are moving from English system to American system, paying attention to disciplines, research and the number of published articles. The whole way is completely imitating the United States. In particular, Hong Kong has gradually given up the aristocratic humanities education in Britain. In Oxford and Cambridge, this is an aristocratic education. As a humanist, you can interview the teacher while drinking, and then go home and write a paper about Shakespeare, Dante and Plato. This kind of education is basically to cultivate a character, a personality, emphasizing classical training. With classical culture, personal morality can be cultivated. Unfortunately, these people became colonialists after 18 and 19 centuries and went to India, Hong Kong and Shanghai to practice their humanistic ideals. These humanists are all so-called generals. They are not experts, but scholars with considerable humanistic cultivation. This tradition is basically gone now. Perhaps the last person may be Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong. From his speech, you can see that he is eloquent and his English is beautiful. His typhoon and his views on the whole world politics have his own way. We may not agree with him, but a tradition he represents is over. Therefore, I personally feel that in the 2 1 century, there have been various humanistic crises, including humanistic crisis and humanistic crisis. The biggest crisis is: what is the use of so-called humanism and humanistic spirit? Many friends in Hong Kong have asked me what is the use of teaching this class? This is a very common ethos in society, a pragmatic ethos, and everything should be useful. This involves a problem that can never be solved, that is, the opposition between humanities and science.
