Southwest Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first research universities with graduate schools, such as "Double First Class", "2 1 1 Engineering", "985 Special Project" and "201Collaborative Innovation Plan". It is located in Chengdu, a famous historical and cultural city in China and a national central city.

The school was founded in 1896, formerly known as Shanhaiguan China Imperial Railway Institute. It is the first engineering education institution of higher learning in China, the birthplace of higher education in civil engineering, mining and metallurgy engineering and traffic engineering in China, and one of the two earliest sources of Jiaotong University.

The school is well-known at home and abroad as "Tangshan Jiaotong University" and "Tangyuan" and is known as "Oriental Cornell". President Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school. Since its establishment, the school has been named as Tangshan Institute of Technology (Engineering) of Jiaotong University, Guizhou Branch of Jiaotong University, China Jiaotong University, Northern Jiaotong University and Tangshan Railway Institute.

The school has undergone two adjustments of departments, and a large number of famous schools across the country have adjusted their departments to support brother universities such as Tsinghua and Tianjin.

1964 the school actively responded to the call of the party central Committee to build the "third line" and moved to Sichuan. 1972 was renamed Southwest Jiaotong University. 1989 The school moved to Chengdu, and in 2002, the new campus was expanded in Xipu, Chengdu. There are three campuses in Jiuli, Xipu and Emei, covering an area of more than 5,000 mu.

There are more than 2,700 full-time teachers, including China Academy of Sciences 10 (including 8 double-hired academicians), China Academy of Engineering 17 (including 15 double-hired academicians), 89 candidates for the National Talent Plan, 20 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 654,300 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

There are/kloc-0 innovation groups of the National Natural Science Foundation, 6 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 8 national teaching teams and 6 national famous teachers. In addition, nearly 50 academicians of China Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering and Nobel Prize winners were employed as part-time (honorary) professors.
