The school was originally named East China University of Political Science and Law. 1In June, 952, the law departments, political departments and social departments of 9 universities including St. John's University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College and Aurora University were merged and established in the former site of St. John's University.
1958, the school was merged into Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; 1963 rebuilt, enrolled students the following year; 1966 to stop enrollment, 1972 to cancel enrollment; 1March, 979, with the approval of the State Council, the school resumed classes for the second time. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed East China University of Political Science and Law.

First, the teaching staff.
The school has nearly 900 full-time teachers, including more than 400 senior professional and technical teachers. Five people were selected into the National "Hundred Million Talents Project", two people were selected as the leading talents of philosophy and social sciences in the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 1 person was selected as the famous teacher of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", two people were selected as cultural celebrities and "Four Groups" talents, and four people were awarded the "Top Ten Outstanding Young Jurists in China".

The school has two campuses, Changning and Songjiang, covering an area of over 750,000 square meters. There are more than 0.8 million students/kloc-0 and nearly 0.3 million faculty members. There are 22 colleges (departments),1more than 80 scientific research institutions.
It has the right to award doctoral degrees and master's degrees in law and public administration, and the right to award master's degrees in applied economics, political science, Marxist theory, sociology, foreign languages and literature, journalism and communication.
There are 16 second-level authorized disciplines for doctoral degrees, 46 second-level authorized disciplines for master's degrees, 24 undergraduate majors, and post-doctoral mobile stations for law; National key disciplines 1, 5 provincial (ministerial) key disciplines, 2 first-class disciplines in Shanghai, and Gao Feng Plateau disciplines in Shanghai 1.
