Southwest University of Political Science and Law, located in Chongqing, was founded by the people of China, the Ministry of Education and the Chongqing Municipal People's Government. It is the earliest institution of higher learning of politics and law in New China, the first batch of national key universities after the reform and opening up, the first batch of national excellent legal talents education and training plan bases, and the first batch of national college students' cultural quality education bases.

The school is an institution that accepts scholarships from the China government for overseas students in China, and it is a pilot university for basic capacity building projects in central and western universities, public graduate programs in national high-level universities, special key discipline projects, new engineering research and practice projects, national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training programs, and independent enrollment.

The school focuses on law, with the coordinated development of economics, literature, management, philosophy, engineering and other disciplines. It is known as the "National Southwest Associated University" of law education in New China.

As of August 20 18, the school has three campuses, namely Yubei, Shapingba and Baosheng Lake, with a total area of more than 3,000 mu. There are more than 23,000 students and 2,000 faculty members. 13 college, with 23 undergraduate majors. At present, there are 2 first-class doctoral programs, 6 doctoral programs in two disciplines/KLOC-0, 8 first-class master programs, 38 master programs in two disciplines and 8 master degree authorization programs.
