Suzhou University has a long history of normal education. As early as 1952, the College of Arts and Sciences of Suzhou University, the School of Culture and Education of Southern Jiangsu and the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Jiangnan University were reorganized and merged to form Southern Jiangsu Normal University, which was renamed Jiangsu Normal University in the same year. The original site is Soochow University College of Arts and Sciences, Tianci Village, Suzhou. Jiangsu Normal University is a key normal college in Jiangsu Province and an important base for training secondary education teachers in Jiangsu Province.

The school has 12 teachers' majors, and humanities majors include 9 majors: Chinese language and literature (teachers' college), ideological and political education, history (teachers' college), English (teachers' college), fine arts (teachers' college), physical education (teachers' college), educational technology (teachers' college) and musicology (teachers' college). The subjects of science and engineering are: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Normal University), Chemistry (Normal University) and Physics (Normal University).
