In the 1990s, many colleges and universities began to change college Chinese from a compulsory course to an elective course, and reduced the class hours.

In 2007, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China sent a letter, suggesting that local education committees and subordinate colleges and universities "conscientiously do a good job in the reform of college Chinese teaching in light of the actual situation of their own regions and schools." Peking University, Nankai University, Tsinghua University, Beihang University, East China Normal University and other schools immediately took action after receiving the notice, and listed college Chinese as a compulsory course for students outside the Chinese Department.
