The scientific tradition of the University of Leuven originated from the mathematician Fritchis, who trained many scientists, such as the cartographer Mercator, whose cartographic method is still in use today. Dodoens, a botanist, and Vesaliua Uss, the father of modern anatomy, also studied or taught in Leuven.
