Shanxi University, located in Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. It is a national "double first-class" construction university, a provincial joint university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Shanxi Provincial People's Government, and a key construction university in Shanxi Province. The school has three campuses: Wucheng Campus, Dongshan Campus and Dadongguan Campus, with a total area of 3,008 mu and a building area of1166,400 square meters.

In February, 2022, official website showed that the school has 19 authorized points for doctoral degrees in first-class disciplines, 35 authorized points for master's degrees in first-class disciplines, 24 authorized points for various master's degrees, 4 mobile postdoctoral stations 14, 6 doctoral and master's degrees in second-class disciplines outside the catalogue, and 2 interdisciplinary doctoral and master's degrees. Philosophy and physics were selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines. Philosophy of science and technology and optics were selected as national key disciplines.
Taking philosophy and physics as the leading disciplines, we will build a multidisciplinary cross-disciplinary group connecting the two major industrial fields of "cultural tourism" and "photoelectric information technology" in Shanxi. Based on dominant disciplines, supported by related disciplines, and focusing on the construction of major research facilities and platforms, we will promote the docking of basic disciplines and applied disciplines and explore new ways for basic disciplines to serve the transformation and development of Shanxi.
