The school's predecessor was the Learning Institute founded by 1903, where Zhou Zhenlin, Huang Xing and Xu Teli taught successively. 1951March, Hunan Agriculture and Forestry College, which was developed from minor schools, merged with Agricultural College of Hunan University to form Hunan Agricultural College. Postgraduates begin to enroll students 1978. 1987 began to recruit doctoral students. 1994 changed its name to Hunan Agricultural University in March.
After a hundred years of wind and rain, the school has always been adhering to the tradition of loving agriculture and practicing the mission of strengthening agriculture and rejuvenating agriculture. Now it has developed into a teaching and research university with agronomy as the main body and coordinated development of multiple disciplines.
The school is the first batch of pilot construction units of the National New Rural Development Research Institute, taking the lead in establishing 1 National Collaborative Innovation Center, 1 Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center and 1 Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center. There are 8 national scientific research platforms and 78 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms.

In April 2020, the school official website showed that since the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, the school has won 80 national, provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement awards, 2 national science and technology awards for hosting, 5 national science and technology awards for cooperation, and the first prize of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements 18 (including hosting 10).
