The history of the school can be traced back to Wuchang Agricultural School, which was founded in 1952. 1984 Hubei Institute of Technology was formed by the merger of the former Hubei Institute of Light Industry and the former Hubei Institute of Agricultural Mechanization, and was renamed Hubei University of Technology in 2004.
