Minzu University of China (hereinafter referred to as "Minzu University of China") is located in Haidian District, Beijing, adjacent to the National Library in the south and Zhongguancun Science Park in the north. It was jointly built by Beijing, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the people of China and the Ministry of Education.

The school was approved by 1978 as a national key university, ranking among the first-class universities in China (Class A), 21/project and 985 project. It is also one of the national excellent legal talents education and training plan, the demonstration base for studying in China by the Ministry of Education, the national postgraduate program for building a high-level university, and the scholarship receiving institutions of the China Municipal Government.
