The Birth of Literature Department of Imperial University in Tokyo
1877 (Meiji 10) 12 In April, Tokyo Kaicheng School and Tokyo Medical College merged to form the New Tokyo University, which was the earliest university established in modern Japan. At the beginning, there were four departments: law department, science department, literature department and medicine department. Among them, the Department of Literature has set up two disciplines, namely, history, philosophy and politics as the first-class disciplines, and two disciplines as the language. Because there has been no suitable professor for the history subject of the first subject, the history subject was cancelled and replaced by the financial management subject two years later. The reason for quitting is that the history discipline must talk about the history of Japan, China, India and other eastern countries, be familiar with the evolution, changes and rise and fall of Japanese and western societies, and be familiar with philosophy. Such talents were scarce at that time, and because there were no suitable candidates, the establishment of disciplines had to be cancelled.
