The school is a full-time provincial-level key normal university organized by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, the first normal university in Sichuan Province, and the first batch of authorized units for bachelor's and master's degrees in China.

China West Normal University is a key university in Sichuan Province. The school was founded in 1946, starting from War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression National Northeastern University Q. At the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War, Northeastern University moved to Santai County, Sichuan Province.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Northeastern University Q moved to Shenyang. With the support of ten salt fields in thirty-six counties in northern Sichuan and ten people of insight from all walks of life, some Sichuan teachers and students of Northeastern University Q set up a private North Sichuan Agricultural and Industrial College in Santai original campus.

1949 Private North Sichuan A&M University merged with Xishan College founded by Mr. Wu, a famous Mohist, to form private North Sichuan University. 1950, the school moved to Nanchong and merged with North Sichuan College of Literature to form a public North Sichuan University. 1952 School merged with East Sichuan Institute of Education (Rural Construction College), Sichuan University Q and some majors of West China University to form Sichuan Normal University.

1956 The school is divided into two parts, and the part that stays in Nanchong is Nanchong Teachers College. 1958 The school was upgraded to Nanchong Teachers College. 1989, the school resumed the name of "Sichuan Normal University". In 2003, the school was renamed "West China Normal University".
