1986 school was founded with the donation of Bao Yugang, the world ship king, and the name of the school was inscribed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping. At the beginning of the school, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, China University of Science and Technology, Peking University and the former Hangzhou University built it. 1996, the former Ningbo University, Ningbo Normal University and Ningbo Branch of Zhejiang Fisheries College merged to form a new Ningbo University.
